In the summer of 1960, a group of young Basque Boiseans ventured to the homeland of their ancestors, the Basque Country, located in what is now northern Spain and southern France, with the dream of creating a dance group to preserve and perform the unique dances of their ancient heritage. They chose to name their new group after a dance company they studied with named Oinkari. Today, the Oinkari Basque Dancers have been together for sixty-four years and counting. Composed of dancers in their early teens to mid-thirties (all of Basque descent), the group performs traditional Basque dances from several different provinces of the Basque country. We are all volunteers and dance in the group to maintain our cultural ties while sharing the Basque culture with others.
